After honoring Nelson Mandela during the anti-apartheid icon’s memorial service in South Africa, President Obama shook hands with Cuban president Raúl Castro. The greeting marks the first between an American president and his Cuban counterpart since Bill Clinton shook Fidel Castro’s hand in 2000.
Obama stopped to shake Castro’s hand on his way to the podium for his remarks, according to reporters. He also greeted Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff, who canceled her Washington trip earlier this year over revelations of the United States’ spying on her and the country’s government.
