Jan 18, 2013- Nhan Dan – A symposium on Cao Lo, a famous general in the nation’s founding period, was held in Hanoi on January 16 with the attendance of President Truong Tan Sang as well as cultural, historical, archaeological, ethnical and linguistic researchers across the country.
Over 2,000 years ago in the reign of King An Duong Vuong (also known as Thuc Phan), Cao Lo was a military general famous for his remarkable contributions to the construction of Co Loa citadel. The citadel was a unique military architectural complex which was central to protecting the country against invaders.
Cao Lo gave his life in a battle to protect the Co Loa citadel. Temples commemorating his life and achievements can be found in many localities across the Red River delta region.
More than ten speeches at the event focused on the general’s life and his services to the founding of the ancient Vietnamese state of Au Lac. The speeches also highlighted his contributions to the making of weapons in those days.
Addressing the event, President Truong Tan Sang stressed that the national hero Cao Lo is a symbol of the Vietnamese spirit, intelligence and strength during the nation’s founding period.
The President also affirmed that honouring the merits of General Cao Lo, as well as other contributors to the national development, is a national tradition and the spiritual cultural foundation of the Vietnamese people.
Additionally, the President hailed the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Bac Ninh province, and the Vietnamese Association of Historical Sciences for organising the symposium which honours the Vietnamese people’s gratitude to their ancestors while providing lessons learnt for the current national construction and defence.
