Japan, US conduct joint warplane drill


Japanese Defense Ministry has announced that Japan and the United States will conduct a joint warplane drill in northern Japan.

The second regiment from the Japanese Air Self-Defense Forces, along with eight F15 fighters is expected to take part. The US plans to send eight F16 fighters and ninety soldiers. Japan says no live shells will be used during the drill.

Meanwhile, Japanese Land Forces on Hokkaido Island are to launch a two-day landing drill on Monday.

Japan’s Defense Minister, Itsunori Onodera, earlier said Japan would use its Self-Defense Forces if needed to boost Japan’s capability to defend its islands.

MBDA's HOPLITE Indirect Precision Attack Concept


At the Paris Air Show 2013, MBDA unveiled CVS302 HOPLITE that is designed to supply an Indirect Precision Attack capability for land and naval artillery in 2035 and beyond. This represents the fourth and latest of MBDA's annual Concept Visions projects, demonstrating once again the company's position as a thought leader in envisaging how innovation in missile systems could dominate the future battlefield.

The HOPLITE system consists of a mission control system, and two missile variants, HOPLITE-S and HOPLITE- L both of which can fly 70km in under two minutes at low altitude or up to 160km at high altitude in under four minutes when the way is clear. The system is able to quickly and safely traverse contested airspaces, and closely coordinate salvo firings to provide an exceptional fire support capability to the front line. HOPLITE's one shot one kill precision simplifies operations while reducing collateral damage risk and mission cost. HOPLITE offers a true step change in indirect precision effects at range for 2035 and beyond.

HOPLITE's mission control guides the operator who maintains executive control. Planning times are vastly reduced by automating the trajectory planning and collateral damage risk modelling. Optimised mission solutions differing in priorities such as time to target or survivability are provided to the commanding officer. These features enable firings that would otherwise be impossible, while removing the need to clear an air corridor and reducing the risk of exposing the launch position. All processing takes place on a tablet sized computer that is generally located with the artillery or warship's command and control but it can also be with a single launcher. By being platform agnostic the system will adapt to a wide range of operational needs.

HOPLITE-S is a 3.2m long, 120kg 'utility' missile for simple, supported engagements. It has a versatile spot-scanning ladar seeker that also provides SAL detection among other functions. As the missile is either 3PrdP party designated or attacks on coordinates, its ladar is used for aim-point refinement. The one-way datalink (receiver) allows mission updates and retasking. HOPLITE-S can be used in more complex scenarios with targeting assistance from HOPLITE-L.

HOPLITE-L is a 3.75m, 135kg missile designed for complex, isolated engagements that require an operator in the loop (OITL) capability. Its multi-mode seeker allows passive and active 3D imaging, and is robust to adverse weather, heavily cluttered scenes and countermeasures. The missile can decelerate to subsonic speeds to provide time for OITL targeting over its two-way data link. This, and its ladar channel, can be used to direct HOPLITE-S onto targets in coordinated salvo attacks resulting in a high-value increase in capability compared to current systems.

Certain innovative technologies allow such high performances. Both missiles use an air turbo rocket propulsion system, with its integrated boost motor, to cruise at over Mach 2. The air turbo rocket offers the benefits of solid rocket motors and gas turbines, as well as allowing the large accelerations and decelerations required by the missiles. A Boosted Kinetic Energy Penetrator warhead enables HOPLITE-L to defeat all of its targets from any flight velocity. Lastly, the spot-scanning ladar is used by both missiles for 3D imaging, target identification, SAL reception, fuzing and as an altimeter.

For HOPLITE, MBDA's European workforce was challenged to suggest concepts and technologies for weapon systems that could give future surface forces the organic capability of delivering precision effects at range. Following assessment by an international panel within MBDA, the winning concepts and technologies became the subject of intense workshops, utilising not only the technical expertise inside the company, but also reaching out to the end-user community.

MBDA'S BRIMSTONE Simultaneously Destroys Multiple Attack Craft


MBDA's combat proven, UK developed, Brimstone missile carried out the world's first surface to surface salvo engagement of multiple Fast In-shore Attack Craft (FIAC) threats with a single button push. The success of the trial has shown Brimstone's unrivalled ability to swiftly strike numerous individual vessels without the need to laboriously designate each target, thereby demonstrating its prowess as a fire and forget maritime surface attack weapon.

A3SM: A True Game Changer for Submarine Self Defence against Threats from the Sky

(Navy Recognition)- As part of the Paris Air Show Navy Recognition was invited by DCNS to visit their factory located near Angoulême in southwestern France. The 260 year old site used to manufacture guns for the "French Royal Navy". It now specializes in the production of submarine equipment such as torpedo tubes and torpedo handling systems. It is also the place where the FREMM frigates' vertical launch systems are produced. The focus of the visit however was the A3SM, a new anti-air defence weapon system for submarine currently under development by DCNS and MBDA.


Representatives from both DCNS and MBDA gave us exclusive details on the A3SM project during our visit of the DCNS factory in Ruelle near Angoulême, southwestern France.

A3SM stands for Arme Anti-Aérienne pour Sous Marins (literally Anti-Air Weapon for Submarines). The project was first unveiled during Euronaval 2012 and it actually consists in two versions: a Mast version and an Underwater Vehicle version.

A3SM: What needs does it fulfill?
Today, submarines have no way to defend themselves against air threats. Submarine forces worldwide have an increasing need to operate close to shores in shallow waters. (As an example during the campaign in Libya, submarines were conducting intelligence missions close to shores). In such situation submarines are an easy target for helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft (MPA). When detected in shallow waters, there is no possibility for the submarine to escape, contrary to deep sea where they can employ various tactics and disappear. Up until now, submarines were harmless against air threats, while significantly cheaper and less complex naval platform like small Fast Attack Craft (FAC) may be fitted with a SAM solution.

It is this gap that DCNS and MBDA are looking to fill. The doctrine of use is not for the submarine to attack first. The submarine will keep trying to escape when faced with an air threat as it has always been the case. However the submarine will shoot it down if escape is not possible.

This fast reaction scenario leaves little time to react therefore calls for ready to fire, fire and forget weapons at all time.

Israeli David's Sling anti-missile system unveiled in Paris

David's Sling, designed to protect Israel from midrange missiles, is expected to be operational within two years • It will become part of Israel's multilayered missile defense network, which also includes the Iron Dome and Arrow systems.

Once shrouded in secrecy, Israel's David's Sling anti-missile system went on display for the first time last week at the Paris Air Show.


David's Sling was co-developed by the Israeli firm Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the U.S. firm Raytheon. It is designed to protect Israel from midrange missiles. It has a range of more than 160 kilometers (around 100 miles).

The system is expected to be operational within two years.

David's Sling will become part of Israel's multilayered missile defense network, which includes the already operational Iron Dome and Arrow 2 systems, as well as the Arrow 3, which is in development. The Iron Dome intercepts short-range threats while the Arrow shoots down long-range threats.

Rafale in the French Air Force, "Terrible !"

The Dassault Rafale is a French twin-engine, delta-wing, fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation. Dassault described the Rafale as being an omnirole fighter. The Rafale is a multirole combat aircraft; capable of simultaneously undertaking air supremacy, interdiction, reconnaissance, and airborne nuclear deterrent missions. The Rafale is distinct from other European fighters of its era in that it is almost entirely built by one country, involving most of France's major defence contractors, such as Dassault, Thales and Safran.

In 2011, aviation journalist Craig Hoyle speculated that the Rafale's performance in Libya is likely to be pivotal to the aircraft's export future, reporting that the Rafale had managed to maintain a high operational rate throughout the Libyan deployment. Hoyle also noted that the Libyan combat experience had caused several urgent operational requirements to present themselves, such as the need for a lighter ground-attack munition and for modifications to the AASM weapon to be more effective when used in the close air support role.

In January 2013, the Rafale took part of "Opération Serval", the French military intervention in support to the government of Mali against the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa. The first mission was carried out on 13 January, when four Rafales took off from an airbase in France to strike rebel training camps, depots and facilities in the city of Gao, eastern Mali. Subsequent airstrikes in the following days by Rafale and Mirage fighters were reportedly instrumental in the withdrawal of Islamist militant forces from Timbuktu and Douentza. Both Rafale and Mirage 2000D aircraft used in the conflict have been based outside of North Africa, making use of aerial refuelling tanker aircraft to fly long range sorties across Algerian airspace and into Mali.

Dancing Parrots – Robot Air-Show


AR.drone, maker of the Parrot AR.Drone has put up an cool dance show at the Paris Airshow 2013, where the performers are eight miniature drones. The miniature drones are demonstrating excellent close formation flying capabilities, which could be applied in the future to swarm techniques. These techniques and applications of other robots from Parrot are covered in the associated article linked above. This is the Parrot show, starring eight AR.drone 2.0 quadcopters, performing their show every few minutes at a specially geared scene located at the static display, near the IAI corral. Designed for outdoor or indoor use, the Parrot AR.drone carries an HD video camera and is intuitively controlled via an android or iOS (iPhone or iPad) devices. On the choreographed display here at the Airshow the eight drones are operated individually, sequenced to synch maneuvers and queued by the graphical patterns on the floor to keep away from each other.

The drone has a smart stabilization system used here to perform impressive stunts including flips and rolls, without losing control. The main difference between the outdoor and indoor units is the rotor guard used in the indoor model. Each drone is powered by 1000mA Lithium Polymer battery, driving the our electrical motors running at 28000 RPM, driving independently controlled rotors that deliver the maneuverability and stabilization control. sufficient for 12 minutes of flight. A more powerful cell can increase endurance to 18 minutes.

Controlling the drones is done via the AR.FreeFlight app downloaded free from Google Play or AR.Drone app available on the Appstore.

While the AR.Drone may be considered a recreational drone, Parrot is also offering a professional, fully autonomous aerial mapping system, dubbed Swinglet Cam. This electrically powered mini drone weighs only 500 grams (1.1 lbs) but carries a 16 Megapixel camera that collects aerial photography of areas up to 6 km2 on a single flight. Multiple drones can operate simultaneously to cover a larger area in a short period of time. The drone uses a built-in autopilot to provide safe, fully autonomous flight from takeoff to landing.

The Swinglet Cam mission is planned and controlled via eMotion 2 that provides mission planning and monitoring, control, recovery and safety control. The system can control multiple drones simultaneously, thus accelerating area coverage. Postflight Terra LT post-mission processing system supports users analyzing image overlaps, creating an orthomosaic within minutes, at 25% of the original image resolution, while the survey team is still in the field. This mode provides a useful function, where it provides the background map for the days’ mission planning.

Syrian tank blown apart by 'Russian-made missile'


A video has been posted online which purports to show a tank being blown apart by a Russian anti-tank missile fired by members of the Free Syrian Army.

Rebels have discovered the value of anti-tank missiles after seizing Russian-made Konkurs weapons from regime bases and turning them against their previous owners.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that sending weapons to Syrian rebels could backfire one day but defended Russia's own military contacts with the Syrian government.

Striking a defiant tone after two days of talks at a G8 summit, Mr Putin said he could not rule out new arms contracts with the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. He warned that arms sent to Syrian rebels however could one day end up being used in Europe.

He along with other G8 leaders agreed seven key objectives to work together on to try and bring an end to the crisis in Syria.

IMDEX 2013 Video Report


A VideoReport by Defense-Update highlighting the 2013 IMDEX Asia maritime and naval exhibition in Singapore. Our review covers the various vessels displayed at the exhibition and at the Changi naval base, these include the French OPV L'Adroit from DCNS, the US Navy first Littoral Combat Ship from Lockheed Martin and SIGMA corvette designed and built by Damen.

Other vessels shown in models include the Independence class LCS, and various submarines. The review also covers naval guns and misiles, and unmanned systems from various manufacturers including IAI, Schiebel, Liquid Robotics and Rafael.

Syrian Rebels Using An Anti-Aricraft Missile To Shoot Down A Military Helicopter


A video clip potsted on YouTube on 10 June 2013 show a military helicopter shot down by Syrian Rebels.

Last year, Three amateur videos have emerged that purport to show rebels shooting down a Syrian military helicopter outside Aleppo. The videos appear roughly consistent with a claim, posted to Facebook by the Local Coordination Committees of Syria, a rebel umbrella group, that “The Free Syrian Army has downed an attack helicopter using anti-aircraft weapons in the Sheikh Salman area in the western countryside.”
Based on these videos, which like so much rebel-made media out of the Syrian conflict are unconfirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt, it appears that a rocket or missile slammed into the side of a helicopter. The aircraft bears some resemblance to an Mi-8, which like much of the Syrian military arsenal is Russian-made.

The EA Worldview blog writes of the reports, “The speed at which these videos were posted, and the speed at which the eyewitness reports [surfaces] that did NOT include the videos, adds credibility that at least one helicopter was shot down.” The blog adds, “We’re cautiously optimistic that all three videos will be confirmed as showing the same helicopter.” A Syrian activist on claimed on Twitter that the video shows “captured anti-craft missiles.”
